Oventus O2Vent Sleep Apnoea Treatment Cairns
Did you know more than a million Australians suffer from sleep apnoea?
Future Dental is an Authorised Oventus Practice and has undergone the necessary training to fit you for an Oventus O2Vent oral appliance and all other styles of Mandibular Advancement Splint, as conservative treatment for people who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing.
For the last 30 years, sufferers of sleep apnoea have been limited to CPAP as their primary form of treatment. But CPAP isn’t for everyone. Certain patients struggle with the mask and adjusting to constant airflow, while some people even dread the idea of wearing it each night.
A newer variant of the Oventus appliance, designed by the inventor of the previous range of Oventus appliances, Queensland’s own Dr Chris Hart, is a new and equally effective, alternative treatment to CPAP. It is a customised oral appliance that has been clinically proven to treat your sleep apnoea and is easier and more comfortable to use than traditional treatments.
What makes these particular appliances unique is the airway design which allows for breathing through an incorporated airway from the front to the back of these oral devices to bypass obstructions of the nose, soft palate and tongue that can contribute to severe snoring and OSA.

Oventus O2Vent and its newer variant, represent a new style of custom-made mouthguard which has changed the lives of individuals who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing. This can extend to snorers and people with more severe problems including nasal obstruction. This world-first sleep therapy works by redirecting the airflow through a non-obstructive breathing path by gently advancing the lower jaw. This gentle shift is enough to create a clear path, allowing you to breathe properly throughout the night.
It is not designed to cause mouth-breathing through the device, but more to advance the lower jaw just far enough forward to open the back of the throat sufficiently to facilitate correct nasal breathing. Its other advantage is that it works equally well in those who have genuine nasal breathing difficulty, especially during sleep.
Design and Technology
The Oventus O2Vent, and its newer cousin device, is a leading design as the world’s first and only oral appliance therapy which directs the air flow through to the back of the throat and bypasses nasal, soft palate and tongue obstructions. This airway technology incorporates a ‘duckbill’ in the device or a simple open “stoma” which allows air to flow directly to the back of the mouth, moving past all breathing obstacles. The device extends from the mouth like a whistle and creates a separate path, and its newer version, just the open stoma, into which a simple valve can be fitted to increase its efficiency.
A precise 3D drawing of a patient’s mouth and bite structure is designed in CAD (computer-aided design) software. The 3D printing technology processes the design, and manufacturers a bespoke, medical-grade mouthguard from durable nylon.
Treatment Process
If you think you may suffer from a sleep disorder and would like to change this destructive sleeping pattern, please contact us today. The following steps detail the Oventus O2Vent treatment process.
Attend your initial appointment
During your first session, our practitioner will check all your medical information and perform a bite registration and impressions of your top and bottom teeth. Based on this assessment, our practitioner will determine if you’re a candidate for a new Mandibular Advancement Splint as designed by Dr Chris Hart..
Have a diagnostic sleep study
It is essential to the process that you have conducted a sleep study in recent years or perform one immediately. For your convenience and comfort, we can refer you through to a sleep physician who formalises the diagnosis after you have had a Hone Sleep Test or Sleep Unit Polysomnography.
3D scan and 3D print
After we have assessed your risk factors and determined your candidacy for this device, impressions and registrations of your jaw position will be processed. A 30-minute appointment is required to fabricate the impression and bite registrations.
Check and deliver device
Our practice will receive the device in 3 to 4 weeks, at which point you will require a follow-up appointment for a fitting, and a discussion on maintenance and adjustments.
Follow-up sleep study
Once you have your Oventus device, you will need to have a follow-up two night sleep study. During the first night, your sleeping pattern and behaviour will be assessed with your device, while your second night sleeping will be without your device. An at-home sleep study can be arranged.
Keep in touch
To ensure your device is functioning correctly, we encourage you to maintain regular check-ups with us, and become part of Oventus’s medical online O2Vent portal. On this portal, you can access your medical records, information, education and support. You can access this page here.
The majority of OSA sufferers are mouth breathers and we will most likely ask an ENT Surgeon to assist you back to nose breathing.
