What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations made of porcelain or composite resin materials. The restoration is fabricated by our E4D milling technology to match the exact cavity in the tooth then carefully bonded to tooth’s surface.
Less protective than a full coverage porcelain crown but substantially stronger than a tooth-coloured composite filling, inlays and onlays can be the best option for many restorative situations.
What is the difference between inlays and onlays?
A dental inlay covers only one or two surfaces of the tooth and is used to restore a smaller amount of decay. Inlays are a popular choice for replacing old or damaged metal fillings.
A dental onlay covers one or more cusps and provides greater protection for moderately fractured or decayed teeth. The biggest advantage of dental onlays is they can prevent the need for treatments such as dental crowns, bridges or implants.
How do they work?
Inlays and onlays are incredibly strong due to the fact that they are made from high-quality porcelain and are skillfully fabricated by our experienced team.
By protecting the tooth from fracturing, inlays and onlays actually strengthen the tooth. Inlays and onlays fit perfectly into the prepared surface of the tooth, helping to keep decay from reoccurring under the restoration. Before the restoration can be applied, the tooth needs to be prepared. Dental decay and damaged parts of the tooth are removed and the inlay or onlay will be designed and moulded to fit the prepared area.
